The central question running through this talk is: Why has China been the largest country in the world for so much of its history? What made possible the reconstitution of a Chinese empire after lengthy periods of division? After rejecting explanations in terms of China’s geography, writing system, or Confucian ideas, it will compare three key unifications (of the Sui-Tang, Song, and Yuan) and also argue for the importance of flexible statecraft traditions. In particular, the adverse conditions the Song faced seem to have sparked creative advances in statecraft.
